This beautiful estate dates back to the 12th century when it belonged to the powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it was the site of a castle built in 1134, which was belonged to the state of Florence and used to protect the Ambra valley. The original castle was destroyed in 1554 by a joint Sienese, French army. The castle, which replaced it in the 18th century, was later converted into the fabulous Villa that stands here today. It is surrounded by rolling, Tuscan countryside dotted with hilltop villages and country farms creating magical picture postcard views, reminiscent of renaissance paintings. La Selva is situated in the Ambra valley within easy reach of Siena (19km), Florence (68km) and Arezzo (38km). Siena holds the famous “Palio” horse race that takes place every year in July and August between the rival sections of the city, where tension run high as the riders race around the central piazza “Piazza del Campo” under the hot summer sun.
Today, the estate has been restored to provide holiday accommodation.
The estate also has a winery producing top quality wines and a large restaurant nearby. In fact, winemaking in the family goes back a long way, as far back as 1245, when Friar Giovanni Carpini was sent by the Pope to China with the gift of a rare Tuscan vine rootstock.
