Adding Airtime
Adding more calling credit to our SIM is easy as 1-2-3. While in Italy you will need to purchase RICARICard airtime vouchers which are available at most convenience stores, tabac shops and petrol stations – all in plentiful supply throughout Italy.
They are available in 3 EUR ($3.87 USD), 25 EUR ($32 USD) and 50 EUR ($64 USD) denominations.
To add the voucher to your SIM card balance simply:
- Scratch off the silver covering to reveal the 16 digit code
- Call 4916 from your Italy cell phone
- Select option 2 for the recharge option
- Select option 1 for the RICARICard recharge option
- Enter the 16 digit code
- The number will be repeated back to you
- Press 8 to confirm
Do not purchase another TIM SIM card when your airtime balance is depleted.

Traveling beyond Italy?
An Italian SIM card is the best option if you’re visiting just Italy. It will always offer the best local rates and you can enable options to call international locations at a good per-minute rate. If you’re working, studying or holidaying for a while in Italy it may cost more than a Global or International SIM Card to purchase initially, but the rates will cover that cost. Having a local number to give to new friends will help you fit in easily in your new country.
However, if you’re visiting more than one country or multiple countries, then a Global SIM card made for international calling is your best option. Free incoming calls are a major feature you should look for and fairly competitive rates to call home are essential.
A UK number (+44) is an advantage. It’s much more user friendly than an Estonia or Lichtenstein number used by some Global Roaming providers.
